Soul-louS V 1.1.0 Post-Release Lesson
UPDATE:
So after doing a little more research into this topic, I believe that having a game posted with unsigned code is still ok, but the only problem is that Windows may believe it is a virus after the game has been posted for a while if the code is not signed.
I decided to revisit the issue that I discussed previously and try and download the original download versions of this game again after I had left them as non-downloadable for a while. I did not seem to get the warning of any viruses this time. This is good news, but was also odd to me why Windows had changed it's mind.
So I did a bit more research, it sounds like this is due to how Windows's virus detection works. Long story short, if an executable is available for download for an extended time, but not many people actually download it, Windows won't trust it and mark it as a virus. That's the understanding I received from a few google searches anyway.
So now, contrary to my original post, I'm going to try and make the downloads available again and see what happens. I have at least definitively proved my games don't have viruses when I try to download them now, so if someone does try to download the game and Windows says it's a virus, then that's just Windows Defender panicking over my download because I didn't sign my code, my apologies. This means the game jam version can be available again though, so that's good.
ORIGNAL POST:
So today I learned a new game dev lesson.
Apparently, if u create code using visual studio for a game, if you wish to post a project somewhere on the internet, you have to do something known as 'signing' your code. From my understanding, this is a process that companies need to do in order to get windows to trust whatever download you want to post (this process also costs money). If you do not do this, Windows treats whatever download you upload as a potentially malicious piece of software.
When I posted both Soul-louS V1.0.0 and Soul-louS V1.1.0, I did not sign my code. So I have recently learned that Windows has been blocking my games from being downloaded due to potentially containing Trojan viruses. That's not fun. Because of this, all downloads for this game are now hidden to make sure people don't think I'm trying to give them viruses.
The web version is still completely safe since nothing needs to downloaded, so just go play the web version. But this also means people can no longer play the game jam version as of now. Because of this, I'm considering doing a small update to the game at a later date to allow the game jam version to be playable within the new game as well, for people coming from the original game jam results looking to see where the game started as.
That's all for now. If you got to this point in this post, I'm surprised you actually took the time to read this, but I thank you nonetheless.
